Mashad Rug, 12' 5" x 18' 5"

Mashad is the capital city of Khorasan, located in Northwestern Iran.  A holy city known for its shrine of the eighth Shiite Imam, Mashad mostly produces large rugs, which are almost exclusively hand woven in deep reds and dark blue.  This carpet is an intricate floral pattern on a deep red field and a navy border, accented with light blue and gold.  Circa 1920.  12'5" W x 18'5" L.
